The one and only time I sunbathed topless I was in France. I
was 18, staying in a chalet in a ski resort in the summer with my future
husband. I hadn’t been outside long when I was interrupted by helicopters
flying low and slowly overhead. I didn’t think much of it though and continued
to sunbathe.
Later that day I spoke to my Dad. “Did you see it?” he asked
excitedly.
“See what?”
“The Tour De France. It passed through the village today and
only comes through every four years.”
“Oh” I responded, the cogs slowly clinking in my brain.
“Yes, it was all live on Eurosport, I watched at home”.
“Oh! That was what the helicopters were then, they were
FILMING!” Ah, the penny drops.
Bollocks.
I never did sunbathe topless again. I just couldn’t face the
thought of someone seeing me. In the case of Kate Middleton though, I am shocked that the prospect of these pictures being published has come about, I think she
is entitled to the very little privacy she gets. Yes, she married a prince.
Yes, she knows that this means their lives will be scrutinised. Maybe she
should have thought about the fact that there were undoubtedly paparazzi hiding
in the hope of some pictures. Do you know what though, maybe, just maybe, it
would be refreshing if there weren’t paparazzi taking pictures of our future
Queen sunbathing. Surely she is entitled to some privacy? If she is not, then
surely she should have a right to not have pictures of her sunbathing topless
shown to the world. Or is that considered our right now, to see other pictures of people who are
relaxing in private?
As a woman, I find even the consideration of publishing
these photos offensive. Surely we have a right that a photo of us semi-naked on
holiday would not be published in a magazine? How would you feel if it happened
to you? OK, so you are probably not a future Queen but I imagine that you would
be pretty horrified. Whatever happened to the idea of a private life? Or am I
just being naïve, thinking that someone who has chosen to marry a Prince should
be entitled to some privacy?
Why do the press think that people want to see these
pictures? Or for that matter, any pictures of any ‘famous’ person sunbathing
topless. I don’t care and I don’t want to see what someone else does in private
on their holidays splashed around the internet. It doesn’t interest me and I
don’t see why anyone else would be interested either.

I completely agree with you... I just don't get it when people say she isnt entitled to privacy. She was sunbathing in a private place on a private holiday yet people think its ok to stick it in magazines. Isn't that like saying it's ok for someone to photograph her in her private house and do the exact same thing? Its a real shame there isn't a law against this type of thing already.
ReplyDeleteI am so shocked that this is not illegal!
DeleteI love Kate & wills but I do think a woman in her position was taking a huge risk by sunbathing topless. I agree it isnt fair and that she should be entiled to privacy, but it is expected that she wont get it and Kate would have surely known that the paps were probably spying on her. I hope she doesnt get hassled like poor Diana did, although sadly I think she will :-(
ReplyDeleteIt is so sad that in this day and age.she is hounded by the media. It is totally unnecessary.
DeleteI can't believe she was actually topless in public to be honest. I find it quite disgusting, she's adored by the country and she feels its ok to bare all in the open (I didn't say public).
ReplyDeleteWhat kind of role model does she think she is? We have more than enough sorry excuses for women getting themselves out to taint our young daughters minds, we don't need what should be a proper lady following suit.
She should have known that since she's in the public interest, if she was to bare all she'd be caught and shown to the world. The pap was just doing his job imo.
But the wasn't topless in public, she was in private on a private holiday. The pap would't have a job if people didn't buy the magazines.
DeleteThe pap was not doing his job. She was not in public and the pap shoot from half a mile away. Can you imagine the kind of lens he used!?!
ReplyDeleteI'm not English but all this stuff about dirtying the royal family recently sadness me! So what if she was topples in her own time and holiday!? Is like someone will take a picture with anyone by looking through your bathroom window!
I like the new generation of royalties and So is the other half of my family who's British.
I agree. I can't believe that this is what the media is interested in these days.
DeleteI couldn't agree with you more. It was a private moment on a private holiday and royalty or not, of course she is entitled to some privacy. I don't think that she was being naive, I think the photographer and then the magazine were bang out of order. I do think that a line has been crossed here and I was so pleased to read in the Indie yesterday that they will be persuing legal action.
ReplyDeleteThank you. I am so glad they are pursuing legal action. It is just so sad that they have to.
DeleteI think she has kind of signed away her right to privacy - but this goes beyond privacy. If she had been topless on a public beach, well that's her mistake, but she wasn't. She was in a PRIVATE garden and the photographer went to great lengths to get a photo of her - any photo, I'm sure he didn't know just how lucky he was going to get. He crossed a line attempting to photograph her whilst she was on private property. The magazine crossed a line publishing the photos and now many more have joined in. Why have they joined in? Because the public BUY the magazine. Every person that buys a copy of a magazine with those photos in contributes to this, they are all saying that it is OK to hound Kate even when she is behind closed doors. Those are the people taking her privacy away from her. @ Scott Collison: When she is in public everyone expects photos and she behaves accordingly. Why shouldn't she be allowed to sunbathe topless when on HOLIDAY, in PRIVATE, with only her husband to see?
ReplyDeleteI don't think she has signed away her privacy, or at least I don't think she should have. It is ridiculous that this is how the media treat people these days.
DeleteI couldn't agree more with Ginger and Mostly Yummy. And have nothing further to add but just wanted to say you have written what I think far more eloquently than I could have.
ReplyDeleteThank you very much and thanks for sharing too!
